  • Pelicans shut down Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum for season
By Field Level Media / Monday, March 31, 2025

The New Orleans Pelicans are shutting down forward Zion Williamson and guard CJ McCollum for the rest of the season due to injuries.

    • Williamson suffered a low back bone contusion on March 19, while McCollum suffered right foot bone contusion on March 23.

The Pelicans (21-54) own the fourth-worst record in the NBA. The team has only seven games left on their schedule, and no real incentive to win.

The shutdown is the continuation of a disappointing, injury-riddled campaign for the Pelicans. Trey Murphy III (shoulder) and Dejounte Murray (Achilles) have already been sidelined with season-ending injuries.

By Field Level Media / Monday, March 31, 2025

  • Grizzlies GM: Taylor Jenkins fired due to 'urgency' of season
By Field Level Media / Saturday, March 29, 2025

Memphis Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman said Saturday that the decision to fire coach Taylor Jenkins was "in the best interest of the team."

    • The timing of Jenkins' dismissal, announced Friday, came as a surprise with the Grizzlies battling for playoff position in the Western Conference. Memphis is 44-29 and beginning a key three-game homestand against the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors.

It was the short time remaining between now and the end of the season that led Kleiman to fire Jenkins, who said repeatedly that the decision was his alone. He offered very few specifics into how he came to that decision, however.

"Urgency is a core principle of ours," said Kleiman, who spoke for just over two minutes. "So, (I) decided to go on with the move."

The Grizzlies haven't acted with urgency. They were in second place in the Western Conference on Feb. 27 with a 38-20 record. Since then, they are 6-9 to dip in the standings and put a home-court advantage in a first-round playoff series in jeopardy.

Entering action Saturday, the Grizzlies and the Lakers had identical records to stand tied for fourth place in the conference. The top six are guaranteed playoff berths, with the top four rewarded with home-court advantage.

Kleiman said the team was not notified in advance and no players influenced his decision.

"I'm focused on how we operate. I'm responsible for everything. I'm responsible for coaching. I'm responsible for the roster. I'm not trying to absolve myself of anything. I'm excited to see what this team can do the rest of the way," Kleiman said. "This is the conclusion I came to that this is in the best interest of the team and we push forward with this group."

Assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo is serving as interim head coach, and Kleiman said he will watch how Iisalo can lead the team.

"There's realistic expectations. There's not going to be time to install a bunch of things this time of year," Kleiman said. "My expectations are clarity of direction and we'll see what we can do."

After this homestand, the Grizzlies will have six games remaining, including road games against teams currently in solid playoff position -- the Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons. Three other games are against teams battling for a play-in spot.

By Field Level Media / Friday, March 28, 2025

The Charlotte Hornets are shutting down point guard LaMelo Ball for the remainder of the season as he will have procedures for ankle and wrist injuries, the team said on Friday.

    • Ball, 23, will undergo arthroscopic surgery for a right ankle impingement and what the Hornets called a minor procedure on his right wrist. The team said in a news release that Ball is expected to make a full recovery, return to "full basketball activity within four to six weeks" as part of a complete offseason work regimen.

The Hornets (18-54) have 10 regular-season games remaining and are second-to-last in the Eastern Conference standings and out of postseason contention.

The team said Ball is one of 10 players this season to average at least 25 points and five assists per game, and that he leads the NBA in fourth-quarter points average (7.8).

Ball is the first Hornets player to average 25 points and seven assists in a season, according to ESPN Research.

  • Grizzlies fire coach Taylor Jenkins despite 44-29 record
By Field Level Media / Friday, March 28, 2025

The Memphis Grizzlies fired head coach Taylor Jenkins on Friday despite the club's 44-29 record.

    • The Grizzlies entered the day tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for the fifth-best record in the Western Conference.

Jenkins, 40, is the winningest coach in franchise history with a 250-214 record with three playoff appearances since being hired in June 2019.

"I'm genuinely appreciative of Taylor's contributions to this team and this city over the past six seasons," Grizzlies president and general manager Zach Kleiman said in a statement. "This was a difficult decision, given the consistent and tangible development of our players and overall success under Taylor's leadership. I wish Taylor the very best going forward."

Per ESPN, the Grizzlies are naming assistant Tuomas Iisalo as the team's interim head coach. He joined the Grizzlies after serving as the head coach of Paris Basketball in 2024, and he was named the coach of the year in his native Finland.

Memphis turned things around this season after a 27-55 campaign in 2023-24, which was marred by the absence of star guard Ja Morant for 73 games due to injury and suspension.

The Grizzlies are coming off a 125-104 loss at Oklahoma City on Thursday night, extending a slump that has seen them drop five of their past seven games. Memphis is just 8-11 since the All-Star break.

Jenkins signed a multi-year contract extension with the Grizzlies in June 2022. He previously worked as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks (2018-19) and Atlanta Hawks (2013-18).

Lionel Hollins held the previous franchise record with 214 coaching wins.

The Grizzlies host the Lakers in a crucial Western Conference game on Saturday.

  • NBA teams with FIBA to explore European league
By Field Level Media / Thursday, March 27, 2025

The NBA and FIBA will jointly explore the creation of a new professional league in Europe, NBA commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA secretary general Andreas Zaglkis announced on Thursday.

    • Silver and Zaglkis made the announcement after the NBA board of governors meeting in New York and the FIBA executive committee meeting earlier this month in Mies, Switzerland.

"The NBA and FIBA are uniquely positioned to build on the rich tradition of European basketball," silver said. "We look forward to collaborating with FIBA to explore the creation of a new league for fans across the continent."

The league, which would aim to increase the game's growth and draw more fans throughout Europe, would merge into the current European basketball structure, allowing teams to play in their national leagues. While some of the teams will be permanent, others would be offered an opportunity to qualify based on merit.

"The European basketball community is proud of its seven-decade history of international club competitions and the elite talent it develops," Zagklis said. "Yet given the sport's popularity and the success of national team competitions, there is untapped potential in European club basketball.

"A new league in Europe would combine the NBA's business acumen with the international expertise of FIBA to attract new basketball fans and investors alike, maximize club benefits, and establish synergies for the benefit of all stakeholders."

More than a year ago, the NBA and FIBA initiated talks with prospective partners, teams, developers and investors.

As part of the league, the NBA and FIBA plan to provide financial support and assist the development of Europe's basketball structure, namely team academies. The two organizations would also continue to back their existing programs to develop all aspects and levels of the game, including players, coaches and referees.

  • NBA abandons All-Star tourney format
By Field Level Media / Thursday, March 27, 2025

It's unclear what next year's NBA All-Star Game will look like, but commissioner Adam Silver said the league is "a bit back to the drawing board" as it moves away from the three-game mini-tournament that was implemented this season.

    • Speaking to reporters on Thursday following a board of governors meeting, Silver said the league will look for ways to improve the midseason event, which this year drew 4.7 million viewers across TNT platforms - down 13 percent from last year. The only NBA All-Star Game with fewer viewers came in 2023, with 4.6 million.

"I thought we made almost an immeasurable amount of progress," Silver said. "I thought this was a little better, but it was a miss. We're not there in terms of creating an All-Star experience that we can be proud of, that our players can be proud of."

This season's format featured four teams competing in a three-game mini-tournament, with 24 All-Stars divided among three teams in San Francisco. The fourth team was the Rising Stars event winner, which was held two nights before the All-Star Game. Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James, a late scratch, was not among the participants. Anthony Edwards also scratched.

"We recalibrated around this year's All-Star game in San Francisco, around more of an entertainment product, and I don't think it worked," Silver said. "The breaks were too long. And I get it: It was an opportunity to celebrate TNT, as they were gonna have their last All-Star Game. It was well-intentioned."

Next year's All-Star Game will be broadcast on NBC, which takes over following a 23-year run by TNT, and will occur during NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

"(NBC is) very enthusiastic about the All-Star Game as a marquee property," Silver said.

The commissioner added that despite the success of the NHL's Four Nations Face-Off, the NBA doesn't appear to be set on adding a USA vs. World format for next year's All-Star Game in Inglewood, Calif.

"I'm not sure that makes sense, with the level of development, if that's fair to lump all the other countries together these days," Silver said.

By Field Level Media / Wednesday, March 26, 2025

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss Wednesday night's game against the Denver Nuggets because of a sprained left foot.

    • Antetokounmpo has played in all 18 games since the All-Star break but missed 12 before the break due to right knee and left calf injuries.

  • Celtics star Jayson Tatum exits with sprained left ankle
By Field Level Media / Tuesday, March 25, 2025

"He seems to be doing OK, he's just icing it right now," Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said postgame. "I didn't see the play. They made the right call, it was a flagrant foul. Fortunate he was able to shoot the free throw and (he's) just taking care of it right now.

"I know he'll do anything and everything to make sure he gets better."

Through 66 games this season, Tatum leads the Celtics in scoring (27.1 points per game), rebounding (8.7) and assists (6.0).
